Sony Launches xvYCC Compatible world’s first consumer digital camcorders

Sony Corp. will shortly launch the “HDR-UX7,” “HDR-UX5” and “HDR-HC7” compact camcorders capable of shooting high definition (HD) video. Sony claims these are the world’s first consumer digital camcorders that ever support xvYCC international standard for wide color range and space. The HDR-UX7 and HDR-UX5 record images on DVD, while the HDR-HC7 does on DV format tape. The HDR-UX7 and HDR-HC7 feature a CMOS sensor with 3.2 megapixel resolution, which is 1.5 times higher compared to the company’s previous models. They also realized a minimum illuminance of 5 lx by arranging pixel array and expanding area for each pigment so sensitivity increases. When shooting video, these models can simultaneously shoot 4.6-megapixel still images using signal correlated pixel interpolation technology. When only shooting still images, they can record up to 6.1-megapixel resolution images. They also feature optical image stabilization, for the first time among Sony’s HD compact camcorders.

If their built-in sensor detects camera shake, the lens itself will move up-, down-, left- or rightwards and corrects image blurring by curving light axis. Meanwhile, the HDR-UX5 is the HDR-UX7’s minor model and can record up to 4-megapixel still images in still mode despite its 2.1-megapixel CMOS sensor. When shooting video, it can simultaneously shoot 2.3-megapixel still images. This model’s stabilization is not an optical system but electronic system.
