Panasonic today announced that it has developed a solar lantern that doubles as a charger for people living without electricity. With a built-in rechargeable battery to store solar energy during the day, the lantern provides light at night and can also be used as a power source to charge small mobile devices like mobile phones. The company plans to bring the lantern to the market in autumn this year after conducting marketing research in off-grid areas in Asia and Africa. About 1.32 billion people or approximately 20% of the world’s population are still living without electricity.

Murata has installed energy system experimental equipment and a wireless monitoring system targeting next-generation smart houses in smart cells constructed by the Yokohama Smart Community in tvk Housing Plaza Yokohama and commenced verification experiments from April 26. Recent electricity shortages and the rising cost of fossil fuels have resulted in a burgeoning demand for the development of energy systems that provide increased stability and efficiency. In response to this demand, Murata has started verification experiments on a next-generation (autonomous cooperation) energy system with the use of the world’s first model-based development method based on the next-generation smart house concept being advocated by the Yokohama Smart Community.

Pantech, Korea’s upcoming smartphone maker today unveiled a new flagship smartphone to challenge Samsung and LG. The new Pantech smartphone Vega Iron has metallic rims that are seamlessly interconnected and sports a 5-inch display. It supports long-term evolution (LTE) connectivity, like most of its counterparts in the market. According to Pantech CEO Lee Jun-woo the Vega Iron started from that avid desire to make a smartphone that only Pantech could make and believe it is their best phone ever that can compete with any smartphone. The decision to have a metal Endless Rim was to create a unique design and increase the sturdiness of the handset. The bezel is only 2.4 millimeters thick.

Japanese cinema chain Korona World has announced that it will be opening Japan’s first full-body, immersive 4D movie theater in Nagoya on April 26. The theater will be equipped with 4DX technology, a system developed in South Korea that adds motion, humidity, aromas, strobes, bubbles and other effects to the standard audio and video experience. The first movie scheduled to be screened in the new theater is the upcoming Iron Man 3. With the 4DX system, you can stimulate all five senses, allowing movie-goers a personal connection with the film. This will be a completely new way of enjoying movies.

Fujitsu today announced a practical version of the world’s smallest, slimmest and lightest contact-free vein authentication sensor. There are a multitude of vein authentication devices in the market, including those for the finger or back of the hand, but the newly developed sensor is unique for its compact form factor, being 5.2 mm thinner and 56% lighter than conventional sensors. At approximately 4.0 g, the size has been reduced to a 25.0 mm width, a 25.0 mm depth, and a height of 6.0 mm. This makes it easier to incorporate into a broader range of electronic devices, including the thinnest of today’s notebook PCs and tablets. This, in turn, helps to expand the range of potential applications for palm vein authentication.
