Panasonic today announced that it has developed a solar lantern that doubles as a charger for people living without electricity. With a built-in rechargeable battery to store solar energy during the day, the lantern provides light at night and can also be used as a power source to charge small mobile devices like mobile phones. The company plans to bring the lantern to the market in autumn this year after conducting marketing research in off-grid areas in Asia and Africa. About 1.32 billion people or approximately 20% of the world’s population are still living without electricity.

TDK announced today the SDG4A series of serial ATA II compatible industrial solid state drives (SSDs) in 2.5 inch form factor with a maxi-mum capacity of 512 GByte. The product employs the newly developed TDK SSD Controller GBDriver RS4 Series. Even without using DRAM cache memory, this makes it possible to meet the requirements for SSDs in industrial applications, with an effective access speed of 180 MByte/sec.

When a jacket is lifted from a rack, an embedded sensor sends a signal to a computer and switches on a brief video showing a recommended combination, or how it looks worn by a female idol. Mitsubishi Electric announced today the launch of three types of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules for home appliances, industrial equipment and railcar traction systems. The modules, which use schottky-barrier diodes (SBD) made with SiC, are expected to reduce the size, lower the weight and raise the efficiency of inverters in power electronics devices.
