Hynix Semiconductor and European chipmaker STMicroelectronics NV completed the construction of their $2 billion plant in eastern China on Oct. 10, the Korean company said. Hynix and STMicro started building the chip-making facility in the Chinese city of Wuxi in April last year, with an aim of grabbing a bigger slice of the fast-growing memory chip market in China. For Hynix, the Wuxi plant was a desperate choice to avoid countervailing tariffs from the United States and Japan. The Wuxi plant has two production lines to produce 8-inch and 12-inch wafers. Hynix and STMicro began production at its 8-inch line in April this year with an initial monthly production capacity of 50,000 sheets.

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION announced today the Japan sales launch of the completely redesigned Corolla sedan—now known as the Corolla Axio and completely redesigned Corolla Fielder small station wagon .The new Corolla models feature a new 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE engine and Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) transmission developed as the main powertrain for compact and medium-class vehicles. The new Corolla models adopt a light-weight, high-rigidity body that seeks both a quiet cabin and superior aerodynamic properties; it uses an advanced chassis to achieve performance that makes it truly possible to experience the joy of driving. The Corolla Fielder features the world’s first one-touch double-folding rear seats with backrests that can be folded flat with a single flip of a lever located in the rear cargo space. The optional advanced Intelligent Parking Assist system supports steering operations when parallel parking and backing into a parking space.Ultrasonic sensors installed on the front of the vehicle detect other parked vehicles and based on the results estimate the physical dimensions of a vacant parking space and set the target parking position. The Corolla Axio features a new Pre-crash Safety System that uses millimeter-wave radar. When the millimeter-wave radar detects a high risk of collision, the Pre-crash Seatbelts provide better initial restraint capabilities for passengers while the Pre-Crash Brake Assist system decelerates the vehicle to reduce the collision speed and contribute to less collision-caused damage.

Sharp Corp. and Kansai Paint Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a paint derived mostly from cornstarch. The two companies facilitate the coating process by shortening the time required for the drying process compared to previous paints. The paint is used to finish the stand of new models “LC-52GX1W,” “LC-52GX2W,” “LC-46GX1W” and “LC-46GX2W” of “AQUOS,” Sharp’s LCD TV receiver line, which are manufactured at Sharp’s Kameyama plant no. 2 and slated for launch in October 2006.The newly-developed paint by Sharp Corp. and Kansai Paint Co., Ltd only consists of a base resin and a solvent. The base resin can be cured by the vaporization of the solvent. This is an improvement achieved by further modifying the esterified starch. Specifically, the new paint excludes a curing agent by adjusting the chain length of ester, optimizing a modified resin and selecting the optimum solvent.

The “Day of AKARI(Lighting)” in Japan is celebrated with the co-ordination of four associations every year on October 21 from 1981 and this is the 26th year. The four associations are: Japan Electric Lamp Manufacturers Association,Japan Luminaries Association, Japan Electric Association and Popularization Society of Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan. Thomas Edison invented the practical incandescent lamp for the first time in the world on October 21, 1879. Edison’s great works were praised, creation of the affluent society by improvement in lighting culture was wished, and the “Day of Lighting” on October 21 was enacted. Edison’s greatest contribution to the problem of electric light was in filament design. He tried over 6,000 alternative filament materials over two years, and spent $40,000 conducting more than 1,200 experiments.

On display at the Renesas Technology Corp. booth at CEATEC JAPAN 2006is an electrically powered go-cart equipped with a microcontroller compatible with FlexRay, a next-generation high-speed onboard LAN network. With the aid of this go-cart, visitors to the booth can experience the advances in vehicle control brought about by FlexRay. FlexRay Enables X-by-Wire System. The controller area network (CAN) standard is a well-established automotive LAN network protocol. However, CAN has neither the speed nor the safety required for the electronic control of basic car operations, such as steering, braking and accelerating. Whereas the data rate for the CAN standard is 512kbps, with a maximum of 1Mbps, the data rate for FlexRay is 10Mbps, or approximately 20 times that of the current CAN standard. Noise and other factors make it difficult to build a stable high-speed automotive network, but Renesas Technology has swiftly overcome such problems with its advanced technological capabilities. It has developed an “x-by-wire” system incorporating FlexRay and created an electrically powered go-cart equipped with this system. An x-by-wire system is a system for the smooth and safe electronic control of steering, acceleration and braking by connecting these components by wire. The x-by-wire system does away with the need for existing bulky hydraulic systems, enabling the design of much simpler and smaller vehicles.
