Canon announces world’s lightest F2.8 telephoto zoom lens RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM for a full-size CMOS sensor

Canon announced today that it has developed the RF100-300mm F2.8L IS USM, a new high-performance telephoto zoom lens for its EOS R System. The Canon RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM is a lightweight and compact large-aperture telephoto zoom lens that combines the high image quality of the L (Luxury) lens, which pursues the highest level of performance, with excellent mobility. Weighing approximately 2,590g, it is the world’s lightest F2.8 zoom lens with a focal length of 300mm for a full-size CMOS sensor.

The lens is equipped with Canon’s Dual Nano USM autofocus system, which combines both ring-type USM and STM mechanisms to deliver high-speed and smooth autofocus performance. The lens features a 5-stop optical image stabilizer (IS) system that helps to compensate for camera shake, allowing for sharper images in low-light conditions and when shooting handheld.

The optical design of 23 elements in 18 groups reduces various aberrations that cause image quality deterioration, achieving image quality approaching that of single-focus L lenses despite being a zoom lens. The lens also includes a customizable control ring that allows users to adjust exposure settings, and is compatible with Canon’s new Extension Tube EF-EOS R 6, which enables even closer focusing distances.
