Sanyo develops earphone LSI chip that also acts as microphone

sanyo.jpgSanyo Semiconductor Co, a Sanyo Electric Co unit, said Tuesday it has developed a large-scale integrated circuit chip that acts as both an earphone and microphone, paving the path for development of cell phones enabling users to converse without a microphone. The LSI circuit chip enables faint voice signals, which a person’s eardrum directly emits when he or she speaks, to be transmitted via a diaphragm to the person’s conversation partner, the company said.

The eardrum emits the voice signals at a strength of about one-30th that of the voice itself.
