TPO Displays Corp. of Taiwan has developed a 4.3-inch (11 cm diagonal) low-temperature polycrystalline TFT LCD panel for multimedia products that can change display resolution to 800 x 480, 480 x 272 and 400 x 240 pixels depending on the type of content to be displayed. Expected applications are game consoles, PDAs, media players and other next-generation mobile products. Using a wide VGA, transmissive LCD, the panel achieved vertical and horizontal viewing angles of 170 degrees, respectively, a contrast ratio of 450:1 and luminance of 350 cd/m2 based on the company’s “Normally Black” technology, which keeps the LCD panel in black mode when no voltage is running. The 16.7 million-color display is reportedly good at color reproduction under a variety of lighting.
Given its touch panel capability, the panel also allows smart design of mobile handsets. Shipment will start in the fourth quarter of 2006. TPO predicts the global market for mobile handsets and automotive terminals using the same size display panels will surpass 500 million units by 2010.
