NEC LCD Technologies today introduced two new 6.5-inch amorphous-silicon TFT liquid crystal display modules with high luminance and video graphics array resolution. The new two TFT LCD Modules NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D eliminate the need for an inverter circuit by employing white light emitting diodes (LEDs) for the backlight system, instead of the cold-cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) that are traditionally used. The white LED backlight system achieves low power consumption in a slim package that, while lightweight, is highly resistant to shock and vibration, making it ideal for use in portable display systems in industrial applications. By eliminating the need for an inverter circuit it becomes possible to curb the generation of high-frequency noise and harmonic current.

Moreover, because the LED backlight system is free of mercury, the new NEC modules are more environmentally friendly than modules using CCFL backlights. One of the model NL6448BC20-21C, incorporates NEC LCD Technologies’ proprietary super-transmissive natural light TFT (ST-NLT) technology and is able to display vivid colors in environments with high ambient light, resulting in high reliability and excellent visibility in a variety of viewing environments. Samples of the 6.5-inch NL6448BC20-21C and NL6448BC20-21D are scheduled to be available for sampling in October 2007. Pricing and availability are subject to change.
