Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Store is set to start trading in secondhand brand-name products in Japan. The service, available only on the Internet from July, will offer a range of secondhand items — such as bags, watches and suitcases — of some 250 brands, including Gucci and Louis Vuitton. The company will launch a special website for the service on July 1, allowing registered users to send it used goods by post and to later submit a purchase request if they accept the chain’s appraisal values. The group will sell used items it purchased from customers only online, aiming to earn around 1 billion yen a year in a few years. Depending on the condition of products, sales prices are likely to be about half regular prices.
In cooperation with a nonprofit organization, the service also aims at helping to reduce the burden on the environment by reusing unwanted goods, and will enable users to choose to donate a portion of their proceeds to environment conservation activities.
