By making practical use of big data on weather, road slopes and floating population, the Korean government plans to offer accident forecast services to drivers to reduce traffic accidents. Korea Cadastral Survey Corporation (KCSC) will lead a consortium to develop “Pilot Project of Disaster Management by Using Big Data” sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. Once the project is completed, the consortium will offer real-time information on the roads with a high possibility of rockslide and landslide in case of bad weather of heavy rains and snows to drivers’ smartphones and navigators.
KCSC expected that the project can reduce casualties caused by the weather-related disaster by offering preemptive information service to people nearby the place with high disaster possibilities. Besides, road management agencies are expected to offer systematic road management with the information and raise the disaster response capabilities.
